On the occasion of the cinema release of ANIMAL, the film by Sofia Exarchou, I had the pleasure of photographing the director and Voodoo Jürgens, who plays a wonderful role in her film.
"ANIMAL, Sofia Exarchou’s second feature, takes a sensitive look at the unseen side of the tourist entertainment industry and the daily lives of those who strive to keep up our spirits, the so-called animators. Their unrestrained efort and grueling working hours almost transform their bodies into those of wild animals, as they struggle day and night to get the job done, always with a smile on their lips. The film is set in Greece, but it could take place anywhere. With tenderness and compassion, Exarchou draws us into a world that is dull and withered behind the scenes. The animators’ working routine is depicted with disarming authenticity and a documentary-like touch, even as every move is perfectly choreographed and meticulously planned. We are caught up in a whirlwind of never-ending entertainment—dances, sketches, music and songs—before ANIMAL ultimately blooms into a poignant coming-of-age story. There is a cheerfulness to the film’s mood, as well as a liberating sense of dignity in everyone’ s dedication to carrying out this tough job as best they can. Awarded Best Performance in Locarno, Dimitra Vlagopoulou inhabits protagonist Kalia with body and soul, illuminating every frame with her peerless turn. "(Maria Giovanna Vagenas)
